"Nano Energy Absorbing Material(NEAM)" developed by Shaanxi Coal Chemical Industry Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd (SXCCTI) is a new high performance energy absorbing material composed of nanoporous materials and functional fluids. The nanoporous material is made of hydrophobic material, under normal circumstances, the functional fluid cannot penetrate into the pores of the nanomaterial. Once the external force occurs, the functional fluid will penetrate into the nanopore, through this process, the external mechanical work will be converted into the interfacial energy and the frictional energy between the liquid phase and the solid phase to achieve energy absorption. When the external force is removed, the functional fluid flows out of the nanopore channel and has reusable properties.

The specific surface area of 1g of nanoporous material can reach 100-1000 square meters, which is billion times that of other materials, and the absorption density can reach 60-100 J/g. By systematically studying the micronanomechanical response of nanofluids in microconfined spaces, the multiple hydromechanical responses, and the energy conversion mechanisms, we use the techniques of materials engineering and surface engineering to achieve an optimal design of energy-absorbing nanofluid materials that meet the material requirements of different scenarios.

At present, SXCCTI has a production and processing capacity of 2000 tons per year, and has developed more than 20 energy absorbing products (e.g. road guardrails, weapon armor, bulletproof vests, car bumpers, helmets, etc.), which are widely used in the fields of road collision protection, mine protection, personal protection, military protection and so on. The company has applied for 56 patents, published 15 high-level publications and 4 group standards of China Coal Association. The mining safety and protection technologies developed based on energy absorbing nanomaterials reached international top level and won the second prize of science and technology of China Coal Association. Since the technical achievements were launched in 2020, cumulative new revenue of over RMB 80 million and profit of nearly RMB 20 million have been achieved.
